12 Angry Men

An overall recap of 12 Angry Men is a murder trial in 1957. There was twelve members that were selected into the jury, for this trial. The individual on trial was a hispanic inner city teen, who was accused for stabbing his father to death. If the teen was to be found guilty, it would be delivered quickly and sentence him to the death penalty. The teen claimed that a knife he once had lost, was later found at the scene of the crime. Many of the witnesses saw and heard things that were strange. One witness heard screaming from a male voice. A women saw the physical killing but it was later determined that the women didn’t have her glasses on at the time and she needs them in order to see. The film begins to get interesting when only Eleven of the the twelve jurors vote guilty. This meant that one of the jurors said the teen was not guilty, this was Mr. Davis. This gave Mr. Davis the time to convince the jurors that if they say the teen is “not guilty” it could be better outcome for the teen. In Mr.Davis’s head, he knew that the situation didn’t seem correct. Some of the members started to believe that Mr. Davis was right and that the teen was not guilty. In the hot room you begin to see the jurors true personalities. Each one of them had different preconceptions of how they seen people and their backgrounds. The majority of the jurors were more self concerned rather than understanding the implications of a guilty verdict. One member made a statement that he would kill the teen just because he was hispanic. They later had a discussion of how the father was stabbed to death. The father was a tall man and taller than his son, but the police report said it was a downward stabbing. Someone who is shorter and trying to stab someone taller, in a downward motion didn’t fit this scenario. As the men try to come to a unanimous decision after being stuck in a room together for six days, the defendant was found “not guilty”. After watching this film it shows you how unfair the justice system can be at times. Mr.Davis stood up for what he thought was the right decision and didn’t listen to the prejudice thoughts about the hispanic individual. In Mr.Davis eyes he was pleased to see the right outcome and justice for the teen.

This semester was definitely a struggle for all of us. We had to adapt to being fully online for most of our classes and not being in person learning. It was difficult at times not having that close connection with some of our professors because we were on zoom. I have never had to do blogs for classes and I loved them, doing these blogs got me enabled me to step out of my comfort zone. It often times gave me joy to be able to post good hard work on wordpress and have everyone see it and comment there opinions. Being able to do blogs and relate them to the topic and movie of the week gave you a better sense of the course and was easier to understand each topic. In my opinion being in person and seeing your classmates and being able to elaborate more on each class together was something I miss. If gave you the opportunity to meet new people in your classes and build new friendships. We talked alot about social media and how it affects and if I didn’t ever take this class I would have not realized how much social media affects us in positive and negative ways. After being home for a few days and discussing my classes with my family, I wish there was communication and social media classes in high school because it gives students more opportunity to see what classes interest them to take in college. Even with having a learning disability this class gave me a chance to express my thoughts more to my classmates and professor. I have sincerely enjoyed my time in this class and have learned a lot. This was my first class for starting my major in communications and I can’t wait to continue this journey with the major I have selected.

Uses and Gratification Theory

This week we started class with a discussion of the uses and gratification theory. The uses and gratification theory is an approach to understanding why and how people actively seek out specific media to satisfy needs. Everyday people use music, books, film and television to fulfil their cognitive and affective needs. People use media to increase the self-esteem and to measure their status in society. There is often individuals who look to seek social integrative needs to receive validation and credibility. These are the individuals who socialize with family and friends to develop or retain relations in society. They both view similar forms of media and find commonalities within that media. This begins to help individuals relationships with others that share the same interests, likes and dislikes. There are others who use media as a mean of escapism and to relieve tension. In the twenty-first century we have has many different forms of media allowing certain individuals to be alone or as a way of coping with loneliness. Some people have certain types of social media that they love to use. Twitter is my most used app, twitter is a place I can be more active and find information I want. You can figure out anything with just a simple search and scroll feed to find news and things that are funny. We also talked about fandom, fandom is something that many people may take more seriously than others. There are many events that people can attend to show their love and support for certain movies and shows. These are the things that can help show their support to the people who make the shows and movies they like possible.

Gratification Theory - Antonio Velardo Blog.com ::

Galaxy Quest begins with the crew of the canceled space-adventure television show at a fan convention receiving introductions and signing autographs. Jason Nesmith embraces and loves the attention he receives from his fans; while his supporting cast resents and despises him for “soaking up” all the glory. The plot of this science fiction parody shifts towards a group of people called thermians. The Thermains are represented by Mathesar and approach Nesmith with an issue of life or death. A group of Aliens threaten the remaining Thermians and they request help from “Commander Taggart” to save their race. To Nesmith he thinks that this is all an act and agrees to help the Thermians with their problem. The next morning he is transported to the Protector and addresses the leader of the hostile aliens, Sarris. At this point Nesmith is still unaware of the danger at hand, he orders Mathesar to fire on Sarris’s ship and then requests to return home to sleep off his hangover. He is then shot into outer space and back to his home in seconds. Nesmith now realizes the situation at hand and rallies his crew to return to the Portector. The film ends with destruction of Sarris’s ship and crash landing of an escape pod into a convention. Finally Sarris attempts to kill the pesie humans and is foiled by Nesmith with a swift laser to the chest. To me this film is solely comedy and action but has heartfelt moments throughout.

Next Lives: Mary Franklin Says Goodbye | StarWars.com
Mary franklin

Then I had watched a TED Talk by Mary Franklin, she was the former Sr. events Lead for Lucas Film, she had the position to coordinate various marketing and promotional events for the company. She received this position because she is a huge Star Wars fan and was apart of the StarWars fan club. She helped the company because she was a fan and she knew what everyone wanted to see.

Question to the class: How do you use fandom to connect with others on the internet? Did you enjoy Galaxy Quest ?

Todays Breaking news

This week we watched two episodes from “The Newsroom” we watched the pilot. “The Newsroom” is about a news group who endeavors to make a news show that reports the news in a moral and sensible manner. They take genuine, newsworthy situations from our reality as they’re occurring and report on them as though they were a real news station that pursued normal and good rules, in a gnawing analysis of our famous press and a cunning obscuring of craftsmanship and reality. Will McAvoy, the news anchor is wanting to carry something new to television. His producer, Mckenzie MacHale, who was once impractically engaged with the new boss wouldn’t like to have her staff think about it. The show begins with Will McAvoy, played by Jeff Daniels, responding to questions at a nearby school. Furthermore, in the wake of utilizing a little humor to get passed questions he would not reply to, he at last snaps when the host requests his supposition if America is the greatest country in the world. Not only does he lash out at a college girl, but he also lashes out on the country that turns his career for the worse. Mr McAvoy is the head at Atlantis Cable News (ACN) and when he comes back to work after his lash out, he soon realizes the majority of his staff is gone from the newsroom. As he examines what occurred with the head administrator of the system, Charlie Skinnern understands that his manager contracted another official maker for the show without allowing Will to meet her. The new official maker is Mackenzie McHale, who has a had a relationship with Will in the past that turned sour. It doesn’t take Will long for him to be totally angry with the entire quandary. Yet he needs to confront realities that she will help spare his show after his outburst. The Internet has brought about profound and rapid changes in the structuring, delivery, and economics of news media.

Watch The Newsroom: Season 1 | Prime Video

News that is delivered immediately has become such a norm to our society. The pressure for immediate delivery increases the tension between factual accuracy and “getting there first” in news reporting. People have access to get instant news for free online, this has given people access to any news at any point in time. As stated in our book, Understanding Media, the internet has officially replaced the tv and radio as the main source for information.  When we look at instagram live streams, posts, and Twitter the news is being circulated within minutes of occurrence. In my eyes we have to be conscious of the news and media and do our own research.

Breaking News Live: Sharjeel Imam sent to judicial custody till March 3 in Jamia violence case

Personally, I enjoy keeping up with the news. Cable news is often flawed, inaccurate, and heavily opinionated. To me the news should be more realistic and straight to the point. There is no reason for these stations to have all this arguing and sugar coating everything that is discussed. I believe staying up to date with the news is an effective and beneficial way to have lots of knowledge about things that are currently happening in our world, good or bad. We face a lot of news everyday and the news itself cannot even handle it. With everything going on with the election there is different sides of the story that you hear depending on the broadcasting station you are listening to. Normally i get most of my news on social media, especially on Twitter. Twitter has this feature where it has the top ten important things going on that day, most of the time it is on news that is happening in our world. Getting my news right from my phone has become a lot more efficient to get news out to people. I think it is ignorant for people who completely avoid the news, though I feel as citizens we should know what is going on. There is a very fine line between not wanting to know and tuning it out.

Question to the class: What online sources do you use to get you breaking news from?

The History of Social Media

Since the day my generation was born social media has impacted all of us either in a positive or negative way. To us it’s our way of life, we have become so familiar to social media its second nature. Social media has been a platform where people post their lives and feelings to the point where they post everything about themselves. The internet has impacted the way we use social media to this day.”If you’re trying to seek a job but post everything you do on the weekends, most employers can look these things up and you’re likely to not get the job. Your first impression is everything in life that affects you getting hired or not hired,”(Miller). What you do on social media is equivalent to how people will perceive you. Social media was originally started to meet new people, build new friendships and relationships. One down fall of social media is that if you want to deactivate your account it doesn’t officially go away, it can always be viewed or searched by many people.” When people start to be comfortable with being an open book on social media, the “reasonable standard” of the privacy is being lowered,”(Miller). Another downfall of social media is that younger teens are allowed access to these apps just by lying about their age when creating an account. One ,they are not old enough by the app rules and two ,they will experience and see things they shouldn’t.

History of Social Media (It's Younger Than You Think) - BroadbandSearch

By the 1980s, many home computers were becoming more common and social media was becoming used everyday.”Internet chat rooms were first being used in 1988 and continued to be popular well into the 1990’s,”(Hendricks).The invention of the smartphone boosted social media from the desktop and laptop computer. Social media dates back as far as 1840s. Andrew Weinreich founded Six Degrees social media site in 1997,(Jones).This allowed users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999 the first blogging sites became popular. “Social media was first created for a site centered on professional networking allowing people to unite with businesses and school contacts as well as companies,”(Maryville). Social media has helped many businesses develop quickly and get ahead of itself, also it has helped people find an easier and better way to connect and communicate with one another. However on the other hand “social media has provided many people with problems such as stress, mental health issues, emotional insecurities and waste of time,”(Pantic). These days social media impacts our lives everyday, whether it be work, school, or personal lives. “Moveon.org was the first activist social media site in 1998. It began as an email group passing around petitions opposing the impeachment of Bill Clinton. After it went on opposing US military actions. Just before the year of 2000 blogging sites began to appear,”(McFadden). Blogging sites are a very popular social media spot today.

History of Social Media - The Big Picture

The evolution of social media has made our human impulses to want to communicate with other people and with the advances in our digital technology. It is the history of humans wanting to establish a close connection with people. The first social media commercial advertisement site was Lunastorm, this began in the 2000s. At times social media is a challenging industry to keep their users engaged. “That is what happened to Friendster in 2002, it was used as a messaging site but also a dating site. Friendster eventually closed in 2015 due to the lack of users. In 2003 Myspace was being launched. By 2006, it was the most visited website on the planet!,”(Samur). The reason it was popular was users were able to share new music directly on their profile pages. The invention of the smartphone boosted social media from computers. The first apple iPhone made by Steve Jobs in 2007, helped focus people to the online community that was building on mobile devices.” In 2019 the Pew Research Center reported that the social media use in the United States showed that 72% of American adults use some form of social media. But in 2005, a year after Facebook went viral that number was at 5%,”(Perrin).This meant the rest of the internet didn’t even know what it was. There was two other major sites in social media that collapsed after a burst of success.

March 2002: Friendster - Then and now: a history of social networking sites - CBS News

The unstable growth of social media has provided millions of people opportunities to post and create new content on a larger platform. A few years ago, no one thought social media would be as big as it is now. There is a large portion of these social networks that is opinionated and fake news that we have to take into account everyday. These issues are constantly posted and discussed on social sites for everyone to see. This modern technology has become our life so fast. It has made distance between the people feel so close. I think people will always be in contact and share their feelings with one another. This is what has made our world full of new and exciting things.”No matter the age, we are always aware of breaking news that is happening. Even when different parts of the world are advancing or not we will still be connected through social media. So what happens next in social media? The media will be shaped by the new businesses as well as by advances in old stories about technology. How will big social media platforms such as Facebook, instagram, TikTok, and others be popular?,” (Maryville), to answer these common questions, I think it will determine how our society handles these next stage of social media’s evolution. I believe that there are people in our world who have educated themselves in these topics. They will continue to study these problems and will help us grow our social media and as a society. Our world is is quickly changing in every aspect of it.

Media Communication Theories

8 commonly overlooked ways to make social media work for you - Biznology

Media is in our lives and is here to stay, everyday we check our phones go on social media for multiple hours, many times a day. We are glued to our phones, television and laptops we never stop and put them down. With all the social media apps it is hard to get away from media. Social media is getting bigger and more useful for everyone of all ages. In today’s society there are opportunities that arise everyday just from social media. We can get all of our news straight from our phone. Some of the news online is questionable and must be more looked into to believe it. Anyone can post anything which means people who lie have a voice as well. There are many rude and negative things that can be sent to you on social media. But because of this there are plenty of mean people in the world and being online allows them to say and post anything they want without consequences most of the time. We can block these accounts but they can just make new accounts and post the same thing. The world can be a very hateful place, especially with social media being so close to us. If we don’t fire back with more hate then that’s the best thing we can do for social media.

Electric Schlock: Did Stanley Milgram's Famous Obedience Experiments Prove Anything? - Pacific Standard

In May of 1962 a human experiment was conducted using the shock method. The subjects were unaware of what he was really studying. The experiment used teachers and students and led them to believe that the students would learn better when they are shocked, however, it tested how far the professors would turn the voltage. Some teachers were questioned and stopped while other, went to the highest voltage. They did that because it was they were told to do, it didn’t matter if it was ethical. The effects of media on society theories sound quite outlandish and hard to believe. The Human Behavior Experiments shine a different light on the matter. Many humans some more than others, are very susceptible to change in behavior given a strenuous situation. We also learned Agenda-setting describes the way that media attempts to influence viewers. News broadcasts use this theory to “help” viewers decide what is the most important issues in the world at that moment.

The Mean World Syndrome - Media Violence & the Cultivation of Fear (DVD): George Gerbner: 9781932869385: Amazon.com: Books

In the documentary, The Mean World Syndrome, The man who studied at the University of Pennsylvania was George Gerbner he spent his life learning how the violence on television affects us. He found that over time, the exposure to media violence had more complicating effects. George Gerbner has said that violence has become more and more shown on television. Now a days violence has become so normalized when viewing anything on screen. This has created people to become scared and have more anger. Often there are scenes of torture or murder that has been shown in recent media. I think that sometimes we don’t need that much violence as there is.

One of the theories in which are believed to have effects on humans from forms of media is the Gerbner Theory. What I took from the Gerbner Theory is it examines long-term effects from television. the main point of the theory is that people start to have a sense of living in the fictional world of television, and begin to align their real life with it. For example, a regular everyday human that watches a significant amount of violent TV will be scared of going out into the everyday world, as if the acts they are seeing will potentially happen to them.

Question to the class: Do you believe everything you see on social media?

Classic Hollywood

The Hollywood Antitrust Case - aka the Paramount Case

This week we talk about the studios finance and distributions and how they were independent’ films. This caused independent producers to find themselves as dependent employees. This week we focused on independent films. The independent cinema has become victims of their own success. This has made independent films look more and more like “microcosm of the studio business” (Schamus, 1998). The industry observers have seen the emergence of the “indie blockbuster” strategy with films like Miramax’s. The conglomerates’ systematic is an addition to the indie film movement. The split between the blockbuster drove major studios and their “Indiewood” counterparts a key to characteristic for the conglomerate era. Cabletelevision has become involved in the indie movement. Mostly in the lower-budget genre and specialty realm. In the early 2000s, studios produced blockbusters that assured them of having profit. Also blockbusters were invested in the indie movement itself. The Payne term ” the cleft between studio movies and independent movies” this could be seen as a symbolic tension that has become essential to the “studio system”. As motion pictures have developed and movie industries have moved away from the classic age of Hollywood with the Paramount decision. At this point all Independent filmmakers were given a chance to show their skills off. In the article Schatz talks about the new development, “The Studio System and Conglomerate Hollywood,”.

Is 'This Film Is Not Yet Rated' On Netflix?

The other screening I watched this week was This Film is Not Yet Rated. This documentary was an American film about the Motion Picture Association of Americas rating system and the effect on American Culture. the MPAA critics are completely confidential and are believed to be made up average American parents that are “not gods but not fools”. The MPAA has received harsh criticism for giving certain films a “NC-17” rating while letting other similar films be shown without question. This means a movie or film rating indicating that the movie contains adult content and should not be seen by people under the age of 17. We don’t witness the entire investigation, however we view it long enough to understand the confusion of some film producers and the shadiness of the MPAA. Several of the MPAA’s tactics are intended to silence employees and any specific feedback on a “NC-17” decision or rating. The MPAA may need to become more open with its investigation and more clear with their direction and involvement of their system. The MPAA rated movies very seriously when reviewing them and many people do not get their movies rated differently when trying to change them. Overall I found this documentary very interesting and showed what the film industry goes through when submitting their movies to the NPAA and how they can actually not get approved at all.

A Decade Under the Influence (2003) - i luv cinema

The documentary A Decade Under the Influence was to show that more films were starting to show more sexual scenes that were becoming okay in all types of movies. At this point movies were no longer made with perfect people who live the best lives. In the video they talk about the “new hollywood”, the films became very popular to people, if they related to how people’s lives were going. at the time. At one point in the documentary there was a change in how the style of the movie went. In the documentary this all came from the revolutions going into the 60s. The documentary Why Be Good? Scandals were based like Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. This caused Hollywood to have to shape up and keep negative news out of the media. In the documentary Jeanine basinger says there were scenes that brought up issues of “ what’s appropriate for people to see, censorship immediately emerged as a key issue linked directly to the medium of film”. There were many conflicts happening during production, about if a film was going too far or not. The 1970s was the era that made new generation of filmmakers create a new kind of audience.

Question: Is the movie rating system working or should they change it?

Motion Pictures in Hollywood

Motion pictures have been a very important part of people’s’ lives for many centuries. back in the early 1900’s, motion pictures have evolved into the form of enjoyment for many families and individuals all over the world. The concept of the motion picture was first introduced to a mass audience in 1891 through Thomas Edison’s kinetoscope. In 1895 the Lumière brothers released the cinématographe. This meant motion pictures were projected for the audience to view. In 1910 film was a popular form of entertainment with the nickelodeon theater. Thomas Edison began the production of motion pictures in 1888. Thomas Edison and his assistant William Dickson created the first device that could record moving pictures. These motion pictures were only a few seconds long and didn’t have any sound. After Edison’s invention of motion picture the industry started to be successful. Hollywood was the spot for the production of motion pictures. The reason Hollywood was booming was because it was a ideal location for the industry and land was sold for cheap. Many of the people who moved to Hollywood that joined the industry, came to Hollywood to get away from their parents companies and to make a name for themselves. Then technology stepped into the picture. The introduction of the VCR was in the late 1970s. This made home movie viewing easy for families. The VCR was replaced by DVD technology in the late 1990s, which is now being replaced by Blu-ray Disc.

This led to the development of the “Big Five” studios. They consisted of MGM, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, and RKO. These studios not only produced and distributed films, but operated their own theater chains as well. The Little Three “major minor” studios were Universal, Columbia, and United Artists (UA). They produced and distributed top films but they did not have their own. The industry was growing, there were some setbacks that studios had to face. The major issue they faced was the supreme court’s Paramount Decree. This turned into a nationwide issue in 1948. The “Big Five” companies were seen as a monopoly and the supreme court passed an antitrust act to decrease their power. Another issue they faced was the growth of television. Watching television became more of a popular pastime for Americans, rather than going to the movies. These studios still produce films and are widely known in Hollywood.

As time passed these studios flourished during WW2 and The depression as they held monopolies in the film industry. There were many great movies that were made however from the late 60s to the early 70s some of the studios went under new ownership. This meant it was just another task for them to overcome. The article also talked about Jaws and how it flourished when it was released. Then things such as HBO were developed and delivered movies to people. The film industry has really changed and grown throughout the years but it is sad how TV has somewhat taken control and people have lost interest in the industry. In the short video Rise of the Studio System, Adolph Zukor was the biggest influential film producer of all time. He manages to do what Thomas Edison could not do. His success was from taking advantage of a fully industrial factory system of production. He was also first to appeal to Wall Street for financial banking. Zukor looked over seas for profits in the business. Adolph had a deep understanding of the public. He got the public to idolize the stars going to the movies, it became its own social movement.

This weeks screaming was When The Lion Roars, and it touched on when MGM was first founded and opened. This showed how films were first made and created. MGM was founded in Culver City outside of Hollywood. After this Hollywood then became booming with new stars and eventually these people became big names in movies. He Who Gets Slapped was the first big movie created by them and showed people how movies were something people could appreciate and find funny. The public’s appetite for these shimmering silver images was insane. There was 45 buildings lots of land, its own police, a zoo, a school, and much more. MGMs first business was a creation of a corporate identity. The identity was dignity and strength and the use of a lion. Ben Hur was the most costly film in motion picture. It was a film that took 3 years and in 2 color technicals. They ended up having a new director, roles, and scripts changed because many didn’t like how expensive it turned out to be. There was 3,500 extras in Ben Hur. In 1927 sound began to rise and this would mean silent films would soon be done

Question for the class: Do you see the film business flourishing in the next 10 years?

The Era of Social Media

Since the day my generation was born social media has impacted all of us either in a positive or negative way. To us it’s our way of life, we have become so familiar to social media its second nature. Social media has been a platform where people post their lives and feelings to the point where they post everything about themselves. In our last blog about the internet I discussed how if you’re trying to seek a job but post everything you do on the weekends, most employers can look these things up and you’re likely to not get the job. Your first impression is everything in life that affects you getting hired or not hired. What you post online is equivalent to how people will perceive you. Social media was originally started to meet new people, build new friendships and relationships. One down fall of facebook is that if you want to deactivate your account it doesn’t officially go away, it can always be viewed or searched by many people. When people start to be comfortable with being an open book on social media, the “reasonable standard” of the privacy is being lowered. A downfall of social media is that younger teens are allowed access to these apps just by lying about their age when creating an account. One ,they are not old enough by the app rules and two ,they will experience and see things they shouldn’t.

95+ Social Networking Sites You Need To Know About in 2020 - Make A Website Hub

In the video by frontline The Facebook Dilemma, they discuss Mark Zuckerberg’s reason to create facebook. It was to make a more open and connected world, we soon find that the apps platform had a negative impact on the privacy of the users. When facebook was first created it was known as an online directory for college students. This gave college students a way to meet new people on their campus through an app. Marks reason for the app was to connect different people using one app. After thousands of people started to make an account to facebook app, Zuckerberg became famous quickly. No one knew that facebook would become dangerous to our world. Many people explained facebook to be the greatest experiment in human history. One of the ideas in the facebook app was to have a news feed that makes you want to keep liking and scrolling because your seeing the things you want to see. One thing that stood out to everyone who watched this is Wael Ghonim. He was an egyptian activist who wanted a revolution in the streets of where he is from. He made one post on facebook and it blew up and thousands of people showed up to his event. This shows the effect social media has on people.

Conversation with Wael Ghonim | C-SPAN.org

Next is the video Machine Outrage this video explains to us how powerful social media is. Most times social media has its advantages either in a good or bad way. During this years Covid-19 pandemic many people turned to social media as an outlet. Social media saved the day during these hard times because we had nothing else to do when stuck in the house. The way people used social media turned monstrous so quickly and all of a sudden we were in the middle of it all. In the other video Generation Like it talks about the same kinds of outlooks towards social media. The video continues to talk about how social media was our worlds biggest transformation. Often if you don’t have millions of likes you dont heard or viewed by higher up influencers.

Question to the class: Do you think facebook is positive or negative to the social media platform?

Should There be a Change to the Internet?

Has the internet become a negative spot for our society? Since 2008 when the internet became a popular activity for young adults, it has spiralled into many directions positive and negative. Since our internet capability has increased many companies and employers have started to use the internet for background checks. This could really make or break the chances of you getting the job. If you’re one of those people who posts everything that you do these actions could cost you not getting hired by the company. In the beginning of the internet there were two important technology advancements made, one was the personal computer, this allowed anyone with access to a phone line to get onto the internet. More advancements started to happen and at that point anyone with a computer could access the internet. We all know what web pages are because we use them everyday, but the development of the web browser is what gave us access to web pages. What’s interesting is that blogs were made to give access to people who wanted to give reviews, investigate sources and find new stories without having to be professional or a platform of publication. It gave people access to speak freely about how they feel and to speak their opinions. The internet has enough power that it has allowed itself to be available to anyone and everyone. It is shown that the “Internet Paradox” is a form of communication but, says that teenagers who use the internet are prone to lack social interaction. This is because teenagers are only focused on the device that connects them to the internet. Ever since the internet has advanced that statement, it has been disproved by the fact that many sites like facebook and World of Warcraft have made it possible for people to meet in person.

Are We About To Lose The Internet? | TechQuila

The documentary Digital Nation talked about how we’re physically in the same place but in different worlds when we are on our phones. Mostly everyday we are looking at many screens and can easily become distracted by this technology. One thing that stuck out to me is how people multitask with technology. There are people who can do homework or study and also be doing something else which seems very difficult. What came up in class is that art students are known to be good at multitasking. I believe this to be true, I have a suite mate who is an art and design major and she often times is doing two art projects at once while listening to edm music. To me this seems very difficult but to her its normal and helps her get through everything she needs to get done.

Later in the documentary they start to talk about South Korea and their internet problems. South Korea is known for their legendary internet cafes. Thousands of these cafes are open 24/7 with high internet access and teens are able to play video games all day and night. Their society has started to realize it is becoming an addiction to most of them. It is known that 1 and 3 children in Korea use the internet, this is not a good statistic seeming how young they are. A positive to come out of this is that South Korea is the first country to take control of this addiction that is happening in their country. Many of these teens have a hard time communicating with their family members. This is because of their addiction and they have become distant and have minimal social interaction. Korea has started to come out with rescue camps, where teens go to loose their addiction to the internet and video games . Many of these kids have started to have medical problems as in eye strains from staring at the screen for so long and ear complication from wearing headphones all the time. Before the internet was a big hit many researchers believed the internet was going to help people in a positive way. There are many concerns with American parents wanting to know how their children have figured out the ways of the internet without being taught. I believe it’s something to do with our generation being born into all this technology it’s easier to learn and grasp.

Another topic that was discussed was World of WarCraft. This game has brought millions of people together in a virtual world. The players travel to different places on mechanic birds and horses and have different quests they have to win. Many of the players have said it allows you to be different from who you truly are. It allows the players to feel special in their own kind of way. To us our imagination is a powerful tool to our brain. This game has had fan conventions that has allowed the players to meet in person. The players consider each other life long friends some of them have even married from meeting in the game. The negative aspect of the game is players have become so addicted they quit their jobs just to be able to play from morning to night. Many of the addicted players usually play 10 or more hours a week.

The United States military is using the computers to do stimulations to treat troops who are suffering from PTSD. This is a positive move for our society because we are helping troops feel normal again. There are many emotions that happen during these sessions. To the military this is a new way of recruiting by using video games its a soft sell. This shows teens what it could be like on the battlefield. The military knows it can’t embrace today’s youth, they are never going to recruit the kind of soldiers that they need though just video games but it’s a start.

Funny Ladies & Vampires

This week in class we continued the discussion and viewing of television. Starting off the week with watching Pioneers of Television: Funny Ladies. The Pioneers of Television video showed the growth and power of these women. The television industry for women started in the early 1950s to the mid 1970s. This documentary introduced me to great actors like Lucille Ball, Betty White, Joan Rivers, Carol Burnett, and Mary Tyler Moore. These women faced many hardships just for being a woman in the television industry but looked past that the hard times to get to the fame. The first women to gain fame at a time where women weren’t allowed to be funny or express what they think is right was Lucille Ball. What’s interesting to me is that Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown NY, which is less than an hour from my hometown. Growing up and going to Jamestown for many things, I have always seen murals of Lucy when she was in her acting days, statues in town parks, and the house that she was raised in. Jamestown NY chereshes Lucille Ball all over the city to this day.

Women back then were expected to dress and act in a manner in which was to be funny but not too attractive. In Lucy’s acting days she was portrayed as a hilarious, beautiful, relatable actress that everyone loved. She portrayed these characteristics in every skit or scene she was in. She paved the way and set a standard for female actresses to act on. The women who I had listed were at the front of comedy and helped generations of women actresses after them, feel comfortable. In 1970 television industries were against casting African American women because of segregation back then. Until Marla Gibbs came around, she was the first African American women to have creative control and casting opportunities in the industry. Marla created her first ever sitcom called “227”. Joan Rivers appeared on television during her pregnancy and many critics did not think that was okay. There were many standards and regulations that actors had to follow in order to stay in show business. Many of the women on Pioneers of Television spoke about how there job was to speak about the things other women wanted to say but couldn’t. These actresses have the ability to speak their minds and will be heard by many people, but someone without a celebrities influence and platform, may not be heard by as many people. Over the years, television for women has seemed to feel like home. These women want to be remembered by making people laugh because they adore acting so much. At the end of the documentary Phyllis Diller says “laughter is the best medicine”, I believe you can always cheer someone up with something to make them laugh.

Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals three favourite episodes
Buffy Summers- main character.

In the episode Hush in Buffy The Vampire Slayer it starts off with students waking up and realizing their voices are gone. The characters come to find out on the news it’s being called laryngitis infection. The vampires know it’s not this a laryngitis epidemic that’s on the news. The only way to get their voices back was to kill the creepy, zombie-like men and that could only be done by screaming. While everyone was losing their voices, communication becomes difficult for everyone. During the pandemic Buffy and her friend find small $10 white boards to use as communication. Some of the forms of communication they used were hand gestures, mouthing words out, sketching pictures, and electronics such as computers.

This episodes portrays a message to the audience that speaking is not the only way of communication. There are different ways to communicate with people then your voice. In America today, online communication is more common than in person communication.
