The Changing Tones of Music

Music is always changing and always evolving from one generation to the next. One type of music that is popular one year might completely change the next. Music is one of the only things in history that can accurately depict when a new generation has formed or a new era has taken hold. Today I listen to R&B, story book rap, with a little punk rock that is making a comeback actually. But I think in today’s world it is really accepted to like all kinds of music from all sorts of generations. Many younger generations today compared to older ones like to listen to music live at concerts or through pod casts that have events. This is very different from years past because sometimes artists didn’t have to do tours to make a living, but their survival is dependent on this revenue stream.

A common theme of history when it comes to music is that most of it has been stolen from Black culture and the music they created. Elvis one of the most famous white musical artists was one of the biggest thief of black culture that he made his own.

This sort of stealing of black culture has been very common especially in today’s music that sees a lot of white artists that use black melody and tones to create a new type a music. Black music expresses pain, sadness, struggle, and transition which is a exact replica of how black life is in the world.

Do you think that music should be appropriated to whomever designed the music? What is your favorite songs and albums from African American artists?

Newspaper on the Fritz

What’s with this old thing with words on it? Ohh, yeah that’s a Newspaper. Its weird because I remember how my grandparents and mother would save every news article from my sporting events, my community outreach programs, and school accomplishments. To older generations newspaper was just the thing you got your news from and also meant a kind of careful thing to preserve. But today we have seen less and less usage of newspapers by younger generations and people in general.

There has been the newspaper for a very long time in human history just in different forms. They were a way to communicate and learn new things about the world that we live in. You could hear how a war started between European powers the world has ever seen while sitting on your couch in New York. They provide a staple of how our society has grown more intelligent about world affairs and how they will effect us in turn.

The news in American history has always been biased in some ways such as during the Revolutionary war where writers up-played the scale of events such as the Boston Massacre. But such as the filmed showed us in today’s society there has been skewed from reporting the news to just getting content out to the people. Americans have become very impatient therefore news needs to be on a want now timing compared to actually doing research on the subject. News stations and paper review have not tried to stop this cycle because its the only way they can possibly stay afloat in our capitalist economy.

With news papers not reporting on correct information will they eventually stop existing?

Revolution of Books and Humans

Why does history always change when we invent a new way of reading? Reading through the chapter it became apparent that at every cross roads to a new way books are made or kept it allowed for human kind to evolve in a mental capacity right along side it. This fact alone shows how books became the best invention human kind ever made. Books allowed for preserving information such as our own history which allowed for better story telling and learning about ones own culture and heritage.

This form of learning was truly adopted by two civilizations the Romans who helped develop the codex and the Chinese who had their own forms of writing they did on bamboo slabs. These inventions allowed us a look on how daily life developed around written word which allowed for official laws to be mandated and taxation be easier on the subjects. Although most people still couldn’t read it was only wealthy people within nations that could afford to learn.

Another point in history the garners merit for its direct line to human evolution should be the invention of the movable type. This invention by Gutenberg was astronomically important it paved the way for less wealthy workers to be able to learn to read. Although the first thing to be printed was the Bible the flow of information from the once select priests and rich oligarchs to the poor peasants allowed for people to spread ideas more easily which could have also caused a few violent revolutions along the way.

An important part of American history was the civil war that brought with is a lot of death and blood shed over slavery. But one of the main factors that definitely had a influence over the war being started was Uncle Toms Cabin. Stowe’s novel was credited with depicting African American treatment by Southern Landowners that disgusted many northerners at the time. This mark in history also left some of the stereotypes we still see today of African Americans. This important book helped lead to the emancipation of slaves which was a defining moment in the United States history.

In the 1900’s books became cheaper due to the paperback revolution which ended the distinction between high and low art. This revolutionized how we see books even today because it allowed for more expressive diversity in voices and experiences sense people couldn’t tell which books were better or worse based on covers. Which leads us to today where we as people value more on the quick and easy content to read just looking at the surface while not diving in to the readings. All these ways have allowed humans to evolve right along side books. Do you think books have influenced human history more than any other invention?
